I prefer this flat soapstone holder to the round one because if I overdo the round one and get to the edge I'll have a hard time extracting more soapstone. This one is just easier to use. Unfortunately, I have trouble finding suitable soapstone spatulas.

I first learned about soapstone flat holders when a colleague used them to mark steel. I should have had one. They work much better than the round soapstone I used. First, it cannot slip back into the handle during use. It's also easier to keep a point on it. So far, I am very satisfied.

Purchased for a professional paver who lays over half a million square feet of pavers a year. Love it. He can take it out of the pocket, slide the stone out, mark it any way you want, pull the stone back and put the holder back in the pocket, all with one hand. No trouble. There is no extraction of fragments from the bag. He marks literally hundreds of pavers a day and appreciates this holder. That's quality. It works out.

Second, the mount is almost unusable. stones. what is ok but next time I'll just buy soapstones or silverpoints. not sure. They don't leave clear marks on the steel when you want to weld. I recently started a project of building cobblestone raised beds. Soapstone seemed to be the preferred marking method, so I gave it a try.
