A HUGE design flaw, otherwise works well. Manufactured in Communist China. There's a HUGE design flaw here. Instead of 2 jacks on the back to connect phone cords. They make the mistake of running the "line" directly from the back of the car instead of having a plug for it. This means you are "locked in" using that particular length of cable. I bought this AT&T answering machine for my elderly mother. I had two main requirements: ease of use and something that could be completely silent if the caller was recording a message. Apparently, the silent mode was deactivated on this answering machine at some point, as some reviewers reported, but the device bought in January 2017 can work silently, as I demonstrate in the attached video. Annnd. . . we have a winner! After a lightning strike ignited my trusty old AT&T 1725, which ended 10 years of service, I had to replace it. While this AT&T 1740 seemed like a better option to me, and was even cheaper than the older model, it underperforms on several counts: confusion in this era of declining semiconductor production costs; maybe it's because of cheaper converters.
