Works well No: walkie-talkies

Works well in all modes and is a good base station. Would have earned 5 stars if the fan hadn't made a horrible whine, too loud and unnecessary. Other radios I've had, 2m and GMRS, have a much quieter fan.

Pros
  • Handy thing
Cons
  • New competitors have appeared

A lot of watts for the price.

Excellent radio for the money. You cannot transmit beyond the first 32 channels. This radio is not for you if you want to use multiple repeaters with different sound settings. This radio is a BTECH 50x2 radio with other hard coded software. The brightness setting cannot be changed. I do not recommend installing this radio in direct sunlight.

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Unreliable

Not what I was hoping for.

I can receive voice but the transmission is not working properly. Tried to set GMRS radio frequencies and transmit low, medium, high mobile and base antenna, still no voice. Factory reset is no different. Have a new microphone no different. Microphone gain is no different. I still play with it but for the money and features it's not a plug and play system. Has an adjustment function like a ham, but is locked. Just very disappointed.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Lots of things

Poor design: radios

I bought this radio as a backup for another brand of wireless carrier and it stopped working on the second test. I used a car cigarette lighter to power it, which I've done at least twice before, and I turned on the mic when the car wasn't running and apparently encountered an under-voltage situation. The radio is dead. Apparently there is no protection against undervoltage, so roll it in the trash. I won't leave anything you can't count on.

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Long delivery time

Light boat anchor.

32 days after receipt the device stopped working. I sent it in and the factory said it was an SWR issue. My SWR has never exceeded f/1.7 on any antenna I've used it on. (mobile or basic) apparently it's so cheap that it can't work with SWR above 1.5 (according to instructions) the exchange took about 10 minutes. (it was a built in SWR meter) The factory now says I have to pay $67 to return the radio. I have already paid for shipping twice. This radio is nothing like my Midland or Kenwoodโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Nice design
Cons
  • Mostly ok, but...

Attention Customer - Radios

Radio configured as a base station with Tekpower 30 amp power supply. Factory configured Laird FG4500 antenna and Times Microwave cable with factory installed weatherproof crimp connectors. I checked the SWR several times and never read higher than 1.06 (no typo) yes, 1.06. The radio failed after a month of use. Btech claims it was my fault, high SWR or low voltage. They claim it was a short circuit that led them to this conclusion. Such a short circuit never occurs due to poor design or poorโ€ฆ

Lots of features and performance for the price but questionable QC

Great product! But. After 1 hour of use on the first day, I turned off the radio and power. In 2 hours I will use it and turn it on. After a few minutes, the screen starts to flicker and eventually turns off. I heard the choices, but had no idea where the arrow was or what part of the menu I was in, so I figured I had a bad block. Turned off and waited for a return. It's been 15 hours and I decided to try again and to my surprise the device worked as usual with no flickering or blank screenโ€ฆ

Cons
  • Zero

UPDATE: Radio swap works! Not sure what was wrong with the old one, but the new one gets into the repeater with no problems. I suspect that a frequency deviation occurred during the transmission. Because of this I changed it to 4 runs. I'm only deducting a star because of two small things and because the first radio didn't work properly. Those points aside, the radio is great, offers a lot of flexibility and sounds good (according to the people who hosted me). First, the volume control rubsโ€ฆ

Cons
  • swap availability
