I received what appeared to be a return. The box has been opened. If you are paying for a new item, this is what you should receive. The box was open at the bottom and not sealed at the top. The filters were still in the sealed bags so I assumed they hadn't been used but I suspect the item was a return.

Like printer ink, official filters are expensive and hard to find, and these alternatives will do the trick. Maybe too good as the first one is only 2 months old and dark gray with dust while these should last 6 months! I also don't use activated carbon filters - they emit a strong graphite smell into the air which causes problems.

I'm so glad I bought these filters! When I see what the filter catches, I'm a little disappointed that I now know we're breathing. I was skeptical as these filters were cheaper than others but they are great filters and great value for money. They stand. They are so easy to install and they not only purify the air but also eliminate pet odors.

I think I figured it out. When you remove the front grille, there is a black filter in front of you. Behind this is then the HEPA filter which should be positioned with the paper side towards you next to the black filter and the shiny side towards the motor. I think the shiny side is the woven material which is the most impervious to dust entering the engine and airflow escaping into the room, so install it with the paper side against the black filter. They definitely have a front and a back. I remove the star because the manufacturer needs to take the time to stamp and arrow them.
