I think I figured it out. When you remove the front grille, there is a black filter in front of you. Behind this is then the HEPA filter which should be positioned with the paper side towards you next to the black filter and the shiny side towards the motor. I think the shiny side is the woven material which is the most impervious to dust entering the engine and airflow escaping into the room, so install it with the paper side against the black filter. They fit my 4386 Fine but the black filter is thinner than others I've used. I don't think this is a big problem as I plan to change it more often.
