Ratchet and hook are all metal. I rode them, strapping a kayak to the roof of my car, at speeds of up to 80mph all weekend with no problem. The only issue I had was that the straps are thinner than more expensive straps and can twist when going through the ratchet. Just make sure it doesn't pucker and you're golden.

These are quality ratchet ties that are as good as those I already have and have retailed from home. They're identically made, except they're yellow, and cheaper for some reason. It comes with a storage pouch which is a big plus. I've used it for projects before and would buy it again. FWIW, this is my third set and everything works. The first set just got rusty, it's almost 15 years old, the rubber buffers have come loose but still work.
