After my laptop was stolen from a restaurant while I wasn't looking, I needed something to secure my laptop and prevent it from being taken away. This product works well for me. You can set your own combination and it fits into the laptop's lock port. It's covered in a nice plastic cover so the exposed cable isn't visible. For a few minutes I was worried (ie going insane) because the place I was working at was supposed to be closed but the lock wouldn't open. Very good laptop lock. I've had cheap models - and the big difference is the locking mechanism that snaps into place inside the laptop. The cheapest ones can be removed with a small screwdriver or pocket knife. This one is a lot harder. I have one and the one that has the locking mechanism screwed into the laptop and the lock snapped onto it is the best I've seen. If you can afford it, buy it, if not, it offers pretty good security.

The lock is inexpensive and of equally poor quality. I was correct in assuming the steel cable was strong enough for my purposes, but the attachment point is very weak and doesn't attach securely to the laptop. If you're looking for more visual containment, this lock will work for you. But if you're trying to stop someone from actually yanking it and running away with your laptop, go for the more expensive alternative. This lock can be picked without tools.

I don't know why so many people have trouble with this lock. I've been using it for about two weeks and I block/unblock about 4 times a day on average with no problems.
