Custom Accessories 41119 Compensating Hydrometer Review

I ordered this and it broke when I took it out of the box and tried to turn the float as instructed. I notified the seller and it was replaced with no questions asked. The unit works and is color coded for easy reading, but the actual numbers are difficult to read so you need to check and become familiar with them before adding acid to the battery.

As such this is a very good and accurate hydrometer. For the price it should probably get 5 stars but there are two things that might be a problem for some. The glass tube is relatively thin and therefore fragile. To clean and dry the device, remove the top bulb and plug. For most applications this is normal as hydrometers are rarely used. One of these things breaks easily in storage, even in the original packaging.

Works well but is fragile. You will need to remove the bottom rubber piece to remove the foam pack around the glass float. It requires tugging and twisting (it's tight) and the tiny thermometer is embedded in rubber, you guessed it, I broke the thermometer. Poor design but hydrometer is easy to use and works well. This item is VERY fragile. My first came with the glass under the bulb broken and I was given a replacement. The second arrived safely, but when I unpacked the glass tube of the thermometer broke. I then bought another hydrometer with a more robust construction. The thermometer glass has an unusual shape with 90 degree bends that place the bulb in the center of the liquid. A few years ago I bought an arrow hydrometer, but the rubber suction bulb didn't fit the plastic housing snugly, and the solution suction tube twisted to the viewing area and was difficult to work with. I couldn't get a good sample of the solution into the viewport without splattering it all over the place. Even good pants ruined by bad work. Thrown away, what a waste.
