Works ONLY on 2.4GHz. not 5GHz :-(

I am very disappointed with how D-Link is promoting this product. Although this device supports 802.11n at 2.4GHz, it does NOT support 802.11n at 5GHz. Q. My Home network uses a D-Link DIR-825 router configured to operate on both a 2.4GHz network and a 5GHz network to offer better performance than the USB-based DWA-160, I ordered a DWA-643 device from Revain. When I installed the device and drivers, I found that the cards can only see networks that operate over the range that the DWA-160 seesโ€ฆ

Extreme N Express Card

I read negative reviews but tried anyway. The card does not always start with Vista. Must be plugged in several times and does not hold the signal. I didn't notice any increase in speed over the standard Wireless G connection, which is built into the Dell laptop and is unreliable. Other reviews were correct.

xtreme-N Express Wireless Card Adapter

This product does not fit properly in the Express Card slots. As a result, this adapter is often misaligned, causing a network outage.

Disappointment - Internals

I upgraded my router to N-Spec and was looking forward to faster speeds and more signal strength with this Express Card adapter. I was able to get it up and running only to find that the signal strength was worse than my built in Spec-G network adapter in my HP laptop. It reported higher speeds, but I honestly couldn't tell any difference in actual use. Another problem is that if someone else with a G spec card (or lower) enters the network, the entire network falls to that level. Consequently,

Does not match advertised characteristics

Installed the product on a fast Toshiba laptop with Vista. The product only connects to my D-Link Wireless-n router at 130 Mbps. Calls to D-Link support did not help. The D-Link cardbus adapter in a much older/slower laptop will connect at 300Mbps.

Functionality over form best inside

Item works reasonably well however mechanical connection to xpress card slot is very poor. The card can be accidentally knocked out of the slot with the slightest pressure, and this can easily happen as the card itself sticks out of the slot more than an inch. When the card is inserted, it works as expected, but inserting and holding the card is a real hassle. so I don't recommend you to buy it. I got mine as a $30 repair so I don't feel like I was ripped off but if I paid the retail price Iโ€ฆ

Works great!: Computer Components

The Xtreme N Express Card installs without any problems, except that you then have to go to the Start menu and go to Connect, find your home wireless network, and click on the topic. The instructions don't tell you to do it. Otherwise it will not connect. Has the meaning. It had all VISTA drivers so it was easy to install and works great. It's definitely faster than the G-port that came installed on my laptop.

Pros
  • New to my collection
Cons
  • Unreliable
