External Accessory Trunk Release

Replacing the rubber cover had its problems and being winter here it was best to remove the entire assembly, once removed it was easier to work with, the original became a resinous substance which I had to use a scraper to remove it, after that it was easy to add a new rubber cover.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Some flaws

Watch the online tutorial first, it saves time.

The project turned out to be more complicated than it looked but once the old rubber was removed and cleaned the installation was easy, everything fitted perfectly. More importantly, the hatch opens every time. The shutter switch was fine, we recommend looking at online tutorials as removing the panel makes this task much easier.

Good product: Exterior accessory

Not an easy decision as the switch has to come out first which means you have to remove the panel in the sunroof to access it. Removing old rubber is tedious and messy, and then of course all the parts had to be reassembled. Took about 2 hours but was worth it to avoid the expense of replacing the entire unit or having people in the garage do it. Works perfectly!

  • This is amazing

Perfect replacement for

Perfect for my 08 Sienna. Put on latex gloves when scraping off old sticky stuff. You need to pull out the mechanism and put a new rubber band inside. You'll need a small Phillips ratchet, a small flathead screwdriver for leverage, and a cutter to scrape the old one stuck to the rubber. I used cotton and rubbing alcohol to clean the mechanism and underside of the latch. Not a perfect cleaning but I don't aim for perfection on a 10 year old van.

Fits "usually ". Just not perfect because it fits from the factory

Installed on Sequioa 2nd generation. Had to take apart all the tailgate plastic and then remove the plastic wrap, unscrew the entire handle area, unplug the wiring harness only to undo two screws to replace it. Once reinserted, it closes the button but does not sit flush. around him like in a factory. For a while I tried to find the perfect fit but I just couldn't. I think since it's on top and under the plastic it might be protected but I'm worried about water getting in. Only time will tellโ€ฆ

fit and shape perfectly.

Remember you will need to wrap everything around the edges of the handle housing to get a factory fit. Just like the installation video. You need to remove the entire back plastic trim, not like in the video as the entire switch trim needs to be pulled out about 3 inches to work properly so you can peel off the old sticky rubber. If you just delete it like a video, it won't get you very far and you will be disappointed. The black plastic panel just pops out, so just pry it off with yourโ€ฆ

  • Great fit for me

  • Requires socket

Right now it works best in External Accessories

Overall this is a good replacement for my Fusible Bar but I had to make compromises. I couldn't get the screws out of the old breech cover no matter what I used ie cone screwdrivers or my own ratchets with a few different bits. I ended up just pressing the lid against the melted goo of the old one. I parked my van in the hot Alabama sun and the old padlock was slowly dripping. I did my best to line up the holes with the screws to get it in place and then just held it there for a few minutes asโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Best in its niche

Difficult Installation on Toyota Sequoia 2008

I gave this tailgate cover an overall rating of 5 stars out of 5 but wanted to share my installation experience in case other Toyota Sequoia buyers consider this latch cover. This appears to be a product used on several different Toyota vehicles, so I'm not sure if installing it on other Toyota vehicles will cause the same issues as the Sequoia. The problem with the Sequoia is that the two mounting screws that need to be removed before you can replace the lid with a new latch are hard to get at

  • Quality Construction
