Big Kahuna on 2016 Honda Odyssey

Haven't towed it yet. much more work than you think after watching online videos. a lot of work to remove the bumpers and underbody protection and to cut a hole for the transmission lines in the plastic cover. (ours had to be removed). Use a heat gun to heat a hose to pull over the radiator/transfer lines. Also lubricate them with liquid. Anyhow, I'm sure this thing will be absolutely amazing and will bring life to the transmission. I still plan to change the fluid every 20,000 km.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Something different

GOOD PRODUCT THAT WORKS!

BIG difference when towing! Installed on a 2013 Chevy Express 3500 to keep the transmission cool when towing an 8000 lb RV. IT WORKS! Only warning, installation is a little tricky, make sure you don't loosen the OEM clamps (I did) and make sure the worm clamps are properly tightened (I didn't and I've recently on gear oil spilled after a long drive!). My own faults aside, the product is great and I'm considering installing a similar Derale oil cooler and adding it to the standard version. I…

2015 4.6 Toyota Tundra

Got this for my 2015 Toyota Tundra 4.6 liter engine. It is also necessary to buy a Toyota thermostat for 4.6 (the part is specified for a 2014 truck). That kept my gear temp down 20 degrees the whole time. Before installing this cooler, my transmission would hover between 200-220 on normal driving, peaking at 230 when towing a 5,000lb trailer (not sure which would be higher as I stopped at that point to let it cool down) . After setting normal driving floats between 180 and 200. Usually around…

Highly recommended for towing!

Prior to installation, my Chevy 1500 5.3 with 4 speed automatic saw transmission temps in excess of 210 F than our 7000 lb 5. Wheel pulled at 45 mph in an ambient temperature of 90 F. The engine was also hot. I now tow a trailer at 65 mph in a 100°F ambient and never go above 190°F on the transmission. On cooler days (30°C and below) the transmission temperature stays in the 160-180°C range. Note: I also recommend buying oil with a thermostatic control valve. On cold days, when the temperature…

Installed this Derale External Transmission Cooler (P/N 13504) on my 2001 Chevy Truck and 2001 Chevy Tahoe. Fit perfectly with minimal modifications. I made a step by step video to show the installation process I used. Search "Trans Cooler Install, '01 Chevy Truck 1500" on YouTube. This cooler works great for us and will extend the life of the 4l60e transmission here in the southern US. Where we live in Texas, you often see 4L60E transmissions fail after 100,000 miles due to extreme heat. So…

Transmission oil to keep it cool. a rather nifty dual heat exchanger that saves space in a crowded modern engine bay. Unfortunately, these radiators were recalled by Nissan due to engine coolant leaking from the main core to the lower portion where the transmission oil resides, destroying many owners' transmissions. So I removed the lines from the radiator to the transmission and used a universal vacuum magazine. Plugs and clamps for permanent sealing of the cooler base. I simply routed these 2

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Good but not great

As others have noted, the 5/16" hose that comes with this cooler is undersized. The Derale includes a 5/16" transmission hose, but attaching to the transmission cooler nipples is fine a real must. IMO they should have included a 3/8" host instead. It took a few minutes to attach the hoses (even after lubricating the connections with gear oil) and in the end I decided I was uncomfortable with stretched rubber. I ended up going to my local auto parts store and bought a 5ft 3/8" transmission hose…
