Don't worry about decorative/craft purposes only

They are made of aluminum and are not suitable for normal clothing use. Too bad I didn't do my due diligence - I needed upholstery buttons. Having not bought self adhesive button sets in 20 years I assumed it would be the style/quality I am used to. Not even close. Aside from being aluminum, their construction hardly withstands any tension applied to the stock without the rear end loosening.

Good, but. - Fixings

I like it a lot, I found a link to this kit on the upholstery blog. I remake chairs and add tufting and it's such an easy way to make buttons. HOWEVER the instructions say that if you are using a sheer fabric add another fabric or backing. Mine is transparent enough for a button to show through, not too bad. So I doubled that with a pad (too thick what a joke) and then did that instead of doubling the sheer fabric, still no luck. Either change directions and leave out what can be done, or…

Worked with upholstery!

I was converting an old coffee table into a tufted stool and wanted to cover the knobs with the same upholstery fabric. I was concerned as many reviews said it wouldn't work with upholstery fabrics, only thinner materials. However, I didn't find anything else and decided to give it a try. To attach the back, use a screwdriver and push in from all sides. This trick worked great. The backs of the buttons looked like they were stuffed but you don't see that on the last ottoman so I didn't care…

You can do that!

I personally like being able to make fabric buttons to order without pressing an expensive button! The first one was tricky but I revised my technique and made 40 upholstery buttons. The thinner the fabric, the lighter! Short nails help. I also improvised and used a pie masher from my kitchen on a blue pusher and hit the end of the masher with the flat end of a meat mallet 3-4 times on a button, which works well! (A hammer or rubber mallet will also work) Be sure to use the blue snap button…

Not suitable for upholstery

I used this to make 48 buttons out of very thick premade upholstery fabric for two tufted ottomans I built and it was a nightmare. Little did I know they were only for fine fabrics - my fault for not doing my due diligence. But with a little improvisation, plus a liberal use of superglue and some extra tools (steel tubing, marker base, etc.) I was able to make the buttons look amazing. The bottom of my buttons didn't look good, but the top did (and that's all that really matters). Also, they…
