Amazing product unless you expect it to be accurate

I'm trying to figure out whether or not I need to replace my water softener. I first bought the 16-in-1 test strips that Revain sells. It says my water hardness is around 50mg/l (those strips are hard to read so maybe +/- 25mg/l?). I wanted to be sure it was giving me an accurate reading so I bought this digital TDS meter. It reads 311 ppm (equivalent to mg/L) and gives me a scary red backlight on the LCD. WOW! I thought - one of them is obviously wrong. I then watched some YT videos ofโ€ฆ

Great for beginners

I bought three of these to lend to students for use at home and on the go. We measure water samples from the area, sometimes on site, and sometimes we bring them home (this year students are not allowed to enter the lab). These meters are correct within +/- 10% when testing commercial standards of known conductivity. Two of the three meters were within 5% and my last one shows 10% under. As long as we know the margin of error, we're fine for our teaching and research application. My studentsโ€ฆ

Easy to use seems accurate

Considering the price this was a great way to test how well my new 5 stage reverse osmosis water filter was doing compared to my old Brita filter and tap water. So true? I have no way of knowing unless I buy an expensive water tester. However, it shows the relative difference between filtered and unfiltered water and the results really surprised me. The city water was 233ppm, Brita 179ppm (about a month old filter) and the 5 stage filter 10ppm. So I like to install a water filter in my kitchen.
