Steel wool is the best antenna

I installed an Eighwood UHF VHF dual band antenna using the trusted NMO mount in the center of the roof of my van and was unable to get reception from the local one Weather Service transmits on 162.400 MHz. With the supplied rubber duck antenna I was able to get the weather service on my scanner in the van. I tried cleaning the center pin of the NMO mount with steel wool and was able to reach the weather service when the steel brush touched the center conductor. Steel wool is a better antennaโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Product Type: Dual Band UHF VHF Radio Antenna Antenna
Cons
  • Drill Kit

Do not buy these antennas

I bought 3 of these antennas hoping at least one would be "good enough" to use. nope Installs on a properly installed HMO in the center of the roof of a GMC pickup. The SWR is *at best* 4:1 on VHF and generally over 10:1 on UHF. All 3 antennas have exactly the same behavior. I've been looking at these things on the service monitor, they're not resonating anywhere near where they should be. I surgically opened up one of these antennae to see what's inside. An acceptable copy of Laird's designโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Package Included: 1pc NMO Radio Antenna
Cons
  • High Price

Looks really cool, will NEVER use it for broadcasting!

Bought hoping to use it on medium power local 2M-70CM repeaters as most of the repeaters here are at high altitude and have wide coverage. I'm sure he would have done a great job until I put an E-Meter on him and I'm glad I did (as I was taught from the start). Judging by the photos it looks great on the roof of my SUV, but it only took me a look at 2 meters to order another HP-72BNMO (compact dual band to the left of this antenna). The SWR at 144.661 was 1.7:1, 146.518 was 3.5:1 and 147.344โ€ฆ

Pros
  • Operating Frequency - VHF: 136-174MHz; UHF:400-470MHZ
Cons
  • Expensive

Better steel wool antenna

I installed an Eighwood dual band UHF VHF antenna with a known good NMO mount in the center of the roof of my van and was unable to pick up local weather service transmissions on 162.400MHz. With the supplied rubber duck antenna I was able to get the weather service on my scanner in the van. I tried cleaning the center pin of the NMO mount with steel wool and was able to reach the weather service when the steel brush touched the center conductor. Steel wool is a better antenna than the Eighwood

Pros
  • Antennas
Cons
  • Very expensive

Bought hoping to use it on local 2M-70CM medium power repeaters, because most of the repeaters here are in high altitude and long range.
