Useful when cutting unusual materials like stone, brick

Useful when cutting unusual materials like stone, brick or rough wood. It's a rebellion how often I achieve it. I had an old one but it was getting rusty so I took this one. Looks like my old one and well done!

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • A few little things

New floor tile project and Empire in contour scale.

The contour gauge went well with the project I was working on. I had to transfer the toilet flange diameter to a piece of floor tile - it worked perfectly. As others have said, the pins are fixed and require some force to move.

Pros
  • Weight
Cons
  • Negative impression

Stiff to the point of being useless

The thing would be really nice if there was a screw to loosen the tines a bit. I've sprayed it with lube and tried wiggling it back and forth a bit but the pins are still VERY hard to get to. Especially the ones at each end don't like to move at all. I've already put some nice notches on some of my window sills just to try it out.

Pros
  • Simple design
Cons
  • Expensive

I bought this to replace another contour sensor.

I bought this to replace another contour gauge that was starting to lose pins. Pros of this model: 1) It can be used for contours up to 6 inches - most other models are 5 inches. 2) The pins are firmly installed, so there is less risk of falling out. As other reviewers have pointed out, the pens are close together, to the point where it takes significant effort to move them while copying the outline. However, after applying silicone grease to the pins and body, this issue was largely resolved.

Pros
  • Dope πŸ”₯
Cons
  • Not sure

Not as useful as it might seem from the ads, but worth it.

You see these pop-up ads for these types of products and if you're like me - skeptical right away! And as for why the size of the pins really affects the details of the relief, I'll also say that in my brief use of the contour gauge, this is a great way to start a complex cut. I also didn't have this tool to cut something and thereby spoil the piece. From what I can see this is for uses like door jambs or stone abutments, it's a pretty neat tool, I like the Empires version as it has metal pins…

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Almost never
