The best deal I could find while still getting quality.

is used in my homemade water filters and jug filters that I don't want to pay for expensive cartridges. Just open 1, clean 2, fill 3, close 4, maybe close again. 5 Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. 6 use and drink

Pros
  • Quality Construction
Cons
  • Very Expensive

Too good! My pump damaged!

Great product for my large aquarium filter, needs about a pound of carbon every 3-6 months so I'm glad I found this. Update: A month later Terrible for my Magnum 350 filter. End up camping. The fish was a week without a filter. I dismantled the filter box and coal flowed like sand into the impeller. Oops it might cost me $80 for parts to mount the impeller as everything is chewed up and the filter box collapsed so I already spent $10 on it. Ouch

Pros
  • Comfortable to use
Cons
  • Makes me nervous

Economical, works great

I use this in my home made water filter and it works very well. They need to have some other filter material at the top and bottom to keep the smaller charcoal particles in place - we use the clear PE wadding they sell for pillow stuffing. This setup certainly can't remove bacteria or other beasts that might pose a risk to your health, but it does make our safe-yet-fancy tap water taste better and cost much, much less than commercial filter cartridges.

Too fine for most aquariums

I can see this working well IF you have a cartridge designed for very fine charcoal, but as far as aquariums go, this material is too fine. I bought net bags especially for this and the grain was so small that it even slipped out of the bags. Good thing I also use cotton in the filter to keep them trapped until the water returns. The filtration seems to be working well, the water has disappeared from the hummus. Tea colored water becomes crystal clear in about 36 hours at a circulation of 1400…

Exactly what I wanted but poor packaging.

This activated charcoal comes in small pieces, just what I needed. Most of the carbon you can find comes in the form of large granules that are really only good for filtering water. However, I was not very happy with the packaging. Activated charcoal can attract pollutants from the air, reducing its effectiveness. I somewhat doubt that tying a knot in a plastic bag creates a very good seal for keeping that carbon fresh. There is no label on the box so I have no idea how old this charcoal is…

Too fine for most aquariums

I see this works fine IF you have a cartridge designed for very fine charcoal, but for aquariums this material is too fine. I purposely bought mesh bags to use this and the grit was so fine it even slipped out of the bags. Good thing I also use cotton in the filter to keep them trapped until the water returns. So far as the filtration seems to be working well, the water went from Humus Tea color to crystal clear water in about 36 hours at a circulation of 1400 gallons per hour with a volume of…

DIY Water Filter Best in Kitchen & Bathroom Fixtures

Media failed to load. In response to a review saying dust makes it unusable, I'm showing my setup as in the picture. I only had to wash the dust off once the first time and from there reuse the same medium to fill 2x 5 gallon containers now for the 4th time in almost 2 months. I drilled 2 small holes in the container lid that I cut off (I used a metal lid from another container). Filling 5 liter jugs takes about 2 hours. I don't sit and watch. I synchronize the fill flow with the speed of the…
