Now I have three Fotodiox softboxes and I use one of them for my Nikon SB-900 with Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 and it works great for that. You can easily adjust the height and don't have to worry about the weight of the softbox slowly sliding down once you lock it in place with a simple twist of the handle.
Works well for intended purpose. The casting is a bit off and a little rough in places, but it works great. I've spent a few minutes with a file and removed some of the burrs from some edges that I thought might give me problems/accidents in the future and they're fine now.
The silver speed ring is made of a rough material that will definitely hurt your hand when you use it to assemble light modifiers. The black mount is flimsy and should not be used with anything larger than 24" x 24" lightweight mods or larger lightweight mods. The point where the vertical bar meets the bracket is a small point of contact that will bend under any weight or break if you take a large modifier. On the good side, it's easy to assemble and use.
When the product arrived I pocketed it and soon found my softbox fell to the floor. I noticed that the mount had lost the silver ring from the handle. I've tried re-tightening the washers but the strut keeps falling off. I understand that the washer holding the bracket together is not big enough to hold it together. If you are really gentle you can hold it for a while. The design is bad and I want to return it for another adapter ring and strut. Please save your money and buy better.
I bought this for the following softbox: Fotodiox Pro Softbox, 32 x 48" (32 x 48") with Speedring Speed Ring for Alien Bees Alienbees Strobe Light In the end everything worked out (mostly). I use a Sony system and since Sony went with the signature style of the shoe I had to tweak it a bit to make it work properly. For everyone else, this should work right away. It works great with the softbox. There are adjustments to move the light up/down and in/out to fit the softbox perfectly. So you canโฆ
As previously mentioned, the ball joint does not tighten enough. My biggest problem is inserting the speed ring. It's rubbery and grippy so the speedring doesn't spin around it smoothly. Being rubber, it also bulges out from under pucks trying to keep it in the speed ring. Worst of all, there is a screw that connects the speed ring insert to the vertical bracket and flash assembly. This means that the entire speedring insert, including the speedring and softbox, will tend to rotate on theโฆ
This mount is a solid product that allows me to use a variety of softboxes with my battery powered flashes for stobistic lighting while running and shooting. I've tested it with Canon 550EX and 420EX flashes - both fit well (as do all standard shoe flashes). The speed ring has 8 holes at a standard 45 degree spacing with standard 1/4" holes for softbox mounts. My softboxes are the Fomex SB-60X90 24" x 36" models which use 4 arms set at 90 Degree to be mounted which works great with this ringโฆ
