This is by far the best thing I've tried

I've been cutting MDF with different types of bits. This is by far the best I've ever tasted. I usually try not to use too much force when drilling, so to speak, let the drill do its job. I've found that with this type of drill bit, when I apply strong downward force to it, the flat underside of the blade just pushes back the MDF in small spirals. I was able to cut through 3/4 MDF in just 5-10 seconds without burning through or anything. I have a regular crown of this size that I've tried with…

Freud is simply the best, better than anyone

When it comes to tools it very often comes down to the principle "You get what you pay for." I've considered getting one to buy a cheaper Forstner bit set. We were working on pine Derby cars and one of the guys turned up with a cheap set of titanium coated Forstners. All the sizes we needed were large, over an inch. But even in a soft block of pine, titanium was slow. I chose not to buy a set from him even though they sell for less than $40 a box. Instead, I chose 3 specific Freud sizes…

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dodgy purchase for the elderly

If you need to drill shelf supports, this Forstner bit is for you. You'll get more accuracy with a pilot bit, and it's really easy to get a consistent 1/4" hole at the right depth. It's nearly impossible to keep a drill bit perfectly straight, but IMO Forstner bits are essentially self-aligning, because as you cut, if the edge touches the material, it naturally seats itself. (or you can at least get a feel for that they don't shrink and make adjustments.) Resins in plywood and/or MDF will…
