GPS is beginner friendly

As a GPS skeptic, I only bought a Geko to indicate maintenance needs on trails. I also found it fun to play with. It's the most reliable way to test my canoes' speed, and navigating featureless water environments like bays and estuaries is no problem. While I'll likely continue to rely on a map and compass for camping and trips, I'm happy with the Geko's advanced features.

Pros
  • Best in niche
Cons
  • Ease of maintainability

Four years later and still leading the way

Probably the most advanced GPS ever. I recently tried replacing it but couldn't find a newer model that offered the same thing as this model. It's small, light, waterproof and cheap. It also gives me a 10,000 point tracklog and is easy to use. Buy maps on paper because paper will still work if you run out of AAA batteries. . In addition, it is an excellent GPS. I've had mine for over four years now.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other models

I like it, but it's hard to get to know

This wonderful device - the way it reads through the trees in the forest - is impressive, but it's hard (for me) to put it down to bring best. I got it for improved reception and only use breadcrumbs, but it can do so much more. So for those of you who need a device that reads forest cover while taking a walk at your local state park over the weekend, this is for you. You will never get lost again. I love walking the trail and I haven't lost my way since I got it.

Geko 201 Handheld GPS

This is my second Geko 201. I mainly use the product to confirm holdpoints when traveling to surface coal mines. Geko fits comfortably in a shirt or jacket pocket. I learned to tilt the Geko screen in my hand so I could digitally capture the longitude, elevation, date and time readings for my logging purposes. The product works well in the US and internationally and is relatively trouble free. although I had to send my first Geko back to Garmin for repair due to a blank screen.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Operating speed

Don't worry about the power button!

I have just purchased a Geko 201 after using the unit a friend loaned me for a couple of weeks. My friend's device had a protruding power button that admittedly was easy to accidentally press. I still decided to buy it because of the size, price and convenience. I figured I'd just be careful and pull the batteries out if there's a chance the button will be pressed. When mine arrived I was surprised to find that the 201 had been restyled. The power button has been recessed and now has a smallโ€ฆ

Great minimalist GPS, but .

I replaced a larger, older, heavier Garmin GPS with this for hiking - works great and is easy to carry and use. I just want to add one caveat - the serial port is covered by a thin rubber protector - and the second time I ripped off the separately purchased adapter cable, I tore the rubber in half. It wasn't a Garmin cable so it might have been sturdier than the real thing and it was my fault but be careful when using the serial port. , so you'll either have to buy Mapsource - the cheapestโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Durable Test Results
Cons
  • Requires outlet

great for geocaching

This is a great GPS for geocaching. Battery life is great and since regular batteries are used it's easy to carry around a spare set so don't worry about the internal battery dying. This model is solid as a nail and still works despite being badly beaten in the Michigan woods. In this price range it is difficult to find a waterproof model. You're staring at a black and white screen with no Google Earth-like imagery, just simple maps that look like a pirate's treasure map, which I found almostโ€ฆ
