Description of GTC GTC505 Engine Ignition Analyzer: Revolutionizing Engine Diagnosis and Performance

Measures spark peak voltage, for finding primary and secondary coil faults. Displays ignition waveforms in real time, allowing for detailed analysis. Detects ramp time (or dwell angle), for diagnosis of timing issues and primary coil faults. Has chart and comparison functions, allowing the user to find intermittent issues. Works on all spark-ignition engines, from small 2-stroke engines with magnetos to modern cars with computer-controlled coil on plug systems.

Tool accuracy is spot on

What I like about this tool is how fast it loads and the different modes that can be used to diagnose an ignition problem. I also like the current ramp feature when using the COP pickup. I couldn't connect to a car that was using plug wires and the car misfired seriously. I could easily spot problems with the GTC505 and now my mate has seen it and wants it too. rzunimag. Great design, good value for money.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

Defective coils quickly identified.

I have been chasing a defect in my LS3 Corvette for days. I found the defective ignition coil within 10 minutes of receiving this tester. Easy to use, the color display is very clear and easy to read. The voltage waveform was the function I used to compare the coil outputs to determine the problem. In the past I've always fired cannon parts to find the bad part. This tool takes the guesswork out of troubleshooting. In my opinion a good tool and a reasonable price.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Some defects

Tried it on DIS on my car and snow blower to see RPM, oscilloscope waveform, Burn duration and spark check voltage on each cylinder. The custom menu options are very easy to use. I wanted to know if the speed of my 1-cylinder snow blower matches my speed per hour. The reading was there, but I had to adjust it from 4 cycles to 2 cycles. And I found the RPMs to be in the 10-20 RPM range. My Fluke 98 and Genisys oscilloscopes have more menus per ms, but this tool is a good tool for the money.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Clarity

Ordered a few days ago and after a day of research on the internet and carefully reading the documentation that came with it, finally tested it. I couldn't believe that a small handheld analyzer like this could read and display so many ignition status parameters. I only wish I had had this useful yet compact tool a few years ago. Just touch the wand with the CS and you will learn a lot about shooting in this cylinder. This primarily affects the secondary winding of the coil, but this…

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Slightly dented

Saved me time, money and nerves.

I have a '94 Corvette with a crappy OptiSpark distributor on the front of the engine under the water pump. Some plugs are also difficult to reach. I've had cylinder misfires and the old school method of pulling a spark plug wire out of the distributor is impractical with the OptiSpark. I've only got less than a thousand miles with new wires and spark plugs. After receiving the device from General Technologies, I read the instructions while it was charging. I went to the shop, started the Vetta…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Almost never

I can't give this tool the full 5 stars because it's a bit expensive - most likely due to ZERO competition. This is a MUST-HAVE tool for effectively diagnosing ignition problems, especially with modern coil-on-plug systems. This tool will save you a lot of time! Navigating through all the options takes a bit of getting used to. Pressing each button to cycle through multiple modes is counterintuitive, but it's not the worst. I use it to monitor spark voltage versus burn time and the display…

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Unreliable

Great tool but absolutely no tech support!

First of all the meter works great! I have dso and got this for a quick test. Works great but instructions leave a lot to be desired. Very little study of the menus and functions. It took a few times to figure out how to use it to its full potential. If you don't know how to read oscilloscope data or ignition waveforms, the manual looks like Chinese. The best way to watch his Morton tst seminars is on YouTube. This should help with some questions about what you're watching. Second, the BNC…

Well designed and built but problematic choice of sensor port

Pros: This tool is very well designed with a solid body and durable plastic buttons that feel nice when pressed. The software is innovative and offers useful modes and views as described in the T&C materials. It's great to have a tool that has probes for both spark plug leads and candle coils (COP). When using the "Tachometer" mode, the revolutions are quite stable in both graphical and digital form. That's really a big plus. Disadvantages: in the diagram, the strongly fluctuating secondary…
