I find this tape so flimsy that I have trouble peeling it off the backing paper without folding it anywhere. And forget about trying to stick a piece of it into the ball. I suspect this can be used directly on the thumb, but even that can be a bit trickier than it needs to be.

When I just want to fill a gap so I have a tight fit I use this. Sticking the tape into the ball's hole may leave marks that you need to scrape and clean. Thumb bandages leave no residue, and if you have them on your thumb, wash your hands.

Great product! I used to use a light glide to ensure a smooth, quick release as I'm a sweaty person. Now I use them every time I fumble. If you have trouble holding them, try washing your hands very well and drying them before applying. If it's still starting to come loose, put a dab of super glue under the protruding parts.
