Go OEM for this application

Automatic transmissions are entirely dependent on fluid pressure. This is a premium Toyo Roki filter made in Japan and designed for this application and to last (100,000+ miles). If you change it, it's unlikely you'll ever need to change it again.

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • Interchangeable

Filter Replacement: Filter

Exact OEM Replacement for Subaru Outback H6 2003 Estate. Location of this filter: Behind the fog lamp on the driver's side. Easiest Access: Jack up the rider's front corner, turn the wheel to the right and fold back the fender panel to reveal the filter. At 240k the original filter rusted and took a while to free itself. After the swap, I noticed a smoother gear change.

Pros
  • Stable Test Results
Cons
  • Some Nuance

The 2008 model may not have a filter at all.

The Subaru owner's manual lists this filter as a maintenance free item. However, I ordered it in preparation for an ATF change. Much to my surprise, my Subaru didn't have a spin-on ATF filter. I have a 2008 Forester and it seems Subaru stopped putting these filters on the 4EAT sometime during the 2008 model year. I ordered from Revain so it was easy to return the unwanted filter.

Fits 2006 Legacy 4 Speed Non-Turbo Automatic Transmissions

The filter packaging was damaged but the filter itself had no damage, the small screen in my filter was actually crushed but shouldn't cause any major damage Difference as this filter does not have a bypass valve compared to the stock engine oil filter, but the new transmission filter fits perfectly. Update: 22/22/2020 While I have no complaints about this filter, I do feel a huge difference in my car when it shifts.

Pros
  • Price
Cons
  • Good but not great

Expensive but smaller than a new gearbox

The filter is easy to install and reassuring. However, the last filter I installed on my car was so tight I had to pierce it with a screwdriver AND use an oil wrench. difficult. Should last for years and miles, but that harsh seal caused the last filter to stick. Also, the price of a transfilter is absurdly high, I'm considering using the aftermarket for my next replacement in 30k.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...

Fits 2003 Subaru Forester

OEM part for 2003 Subaru Forester. If you buy a filter from your local auto parts store, they will sell you a matching oil filter. It will work in a pinch, but I would go with the OEM part as it was designed for an automatic transmission with no bypass valve. Several people have opened up the filters and found that they are designed differently than a regular oil filter. I bought a used 2003 Forester with 200,000 miles on the odometer. I then flushed the transmission twice with Valvoline…

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • There are new competitors
