Description of Gopala 6FT (1.8M) Cisco Console Cable - USB to RJ45 Cable with FTDI Chip

This Cisco console cable work on configuring a links's router with a Mac Pro osx, already had it hooked to a Mac book pro running Sierra. Works great for console connections, but you must still provide your own configuring software. Use a free version of putty for Mac to access the CLI but others use various GUI apps. Linksys is Cisco's SOHO consumer grade brand, just make sure that the router is a managed one rather than having to utilize their HTTP based configuration utility. Support with Ubuntu namely Linix XP, 2000, Mac OS, breack sequence. FTDI FT232R chip + RS232 Level Shifter. Please note:this cable is sold specifically for use with Cisco routers or switches. The pin-out may not match other devices as there is no standard for pin connections or levels for RS-232 on RJ45 8 pin modular connectors.

Works for Cisco and Ubiquiti.

There are no instructions. Windows is described in other reviews. For MacBook Pro and Ubiquiti I do the following. Connect the cable at both ends. In a terminal window, type: ls /dev/*usb* You will see something like: /dev/cu.usbserial-A97TW2UQ /dev/tty .usbserial-A97TW2UQ Select and copy the filename that contains "tty.usb". . It didn't work out of the box

I chose it because of the "Revain Choice" label and the positive reviews. Retroactive 20/20. Throw it in my tool bag to have ready when needed. I finally got a call from work, need smart hands on a cisco router. I'm like, "Whoa, time for a new cable." Yeah, I found that out because the cable didn't work at all. Fast delivery and now I can connect to my Cisco switch

First I ordered it on Wednesday afternoon and received it on Thursday morning! Amazing 1 day delivery! As for the cable - after I plugged it into my Windows 10 PC, the drivers installed automatically. I checked the COM port in device management (I had COM5) and after entering it in PuTtY I was able to connect to my Cisco Catalyst 2950. It worked as intended. Definitely recommended if you need to connect to a switch and don't have a serial port on your computer (anyone else has them? lol).

Great Cable, Unusual Setup (Windows 10 Switch to 3750G)

So far so good! However, it only took me 30 minutes lol. First setup advice as I just went through this and want to help anyone facing the same problem. My pens are upside down!?

Whenever I connected my cable to a Cisco switch/router from any host computer, each terminal showed a blank screen with just a cursor and nothing happened when I pressed a key. I have a different console cable and have tested and compared the RJ45 pins on the two cables. Luckily, Revain made it easy and included a pinout (on this webpage) of the cable that corresponds to the pin numbers. Addendum: Cable defective?

*Update below*Looks like I have a broken cable. I was trying to connect from 3 different computers to 3 separate Cisco switches. Neither of them allowed the connection. I verified the switches were working properly by plugging in a different console cable. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Tried with Putty, Tera Term and Hyper Terminal none of them worked without success. Judging by the reviews I might be in the minority. To be honest the cable was easy to install. I plugged it in
