I had to hold down the button and eventually it worked without holding it down then I couldn't turn it off, when I finally turned it off it didn't work. The 2 minutes I spent just cleaning the bathtub faucet and handles made a huge difference and then it died. It will take time to figure everything out. First you need to learn how to remove the battery cover on the bottom. I found the best way to do this was to press the two small buttons on the black rubber grip by sticking my fingernail under the edge of the battery cover and pulling.
