I bought these because for 1919 painting methods I thought I'd give them a try. It's actually not even close to what they used, but I thought it would be fun nonetheless. The Impressionists used a type of thin cardboard called millboard for illustration, which was soaked in oil before use. It was an interesting surface to work with, a bit of a rough texture, they really absorbed the oil into the paint so I had to work really hard to get the results I wanted with the paint. I usually paint on it with open acrylic paints. They take color very well. The surface is somewhat absorbent, so the paint dries quickly and has a slightly matt finish. They can take some abuse; I even dropped one on a corner and it didn't crack, although I was probably lucky. Brown is pretty good for some subjects and it really helps with the color.
