I bought these because for 1919 painting methods I thought I'd give them a try. It's actually not even close to what they used, but I thought it would be fun nonetheless. The Impressionists used a type of thin cardboard called millboard for illustration, which was soaked in oil before use. It was an interesting surface to work with, a bit of a rough texture, they really absorbed the oil into the paint so I had to work really hard to get the results I wanted with the paint. I have to use a few more to see if I really like them. To solve the problem of how to set up the easel, I stuck pins in the four corners and attached them to a thin piece of styrofoam. Worked great.
