My brother sent me another cartridge under warranty who also noticed and then claimed my drum was defective and demanded that I pay $125 for a new drum (for a $179 printer!). Using hours of reading and an 8x loupe on higher quality paper - just below photo quality - I concluded that the print quality was limited by imperfections in the paper's surface.
