This item is being sold because it was intended to leave a hole in the wall where a picture hanger should be placed. My walls have a slight texture and it's impossible to see where the dimple is. This product would be better if it left a pin prick or if the loop holding the image wire was on the front of the instrument so the image could be removed after it was placed and firm finger pressure would leave an indentation. Takes the guesswork out of how far to drive a nail or hook from the top of a picture or image. I had no trouble seeing the dimples in my photos. You can always put something like ink, paint or nail polish on the tip and then press it against the wall if you have a very delicate painting that you don't want to press. This is very handy for locating photos. I have hung many paintings on masonite which has a fairly rough texture and therefore the normal dimples that the item makes were not visible but the Workaround was easy - I just used a magic marker to "draw" the sharp tip and then quickly positioned the image on the wall and rocked it back and forth a few times and there was a nice little black dot on the wall showing where the hanger should have been hung.
