works well with silver solder

This flux was used to solder band saw blades. Works very well with Stay Silv 45. Seam is clean and fully soldered. The solder spread very well when the seam was heated with propane.

Already opened upon receipt

Just received it today, it was open and leaking. Only part of the silver seal was folded back, and the top of the lid was brown and caked. I needed it right away so I used it and it seems to be working fine. I am annoyed that it was open. I will not buy again.

Does the job but can be difficult to clean

I wanted to give this unit 4 stars because it is difficult to clean. Then my gunsmith friend told me to soak it in water once you're done soldering. He came off with a moderate effort using warm, soapy water. All joints are level and clean.

Harris is #1 in welding consumables.

I hated the fact that it was in the box with no packaging. I like that it didn't break. The product works great as always with Harris products. I'll try their black flux next time because it works at a higher temperature.

Should have read reviews

I screwed up. I was in a rush and didn't read the reviews. I needed more flux and ordered this. I drink a lot. This thing is terrible! I used it once and threw it in the trash. Even as a prolific solderer, I couldn't get it to flow. I hope you read this review before you click the 'order' button. You have been informed!

Virtually useless for silver soldering

Very high melting point (higher than silver solder), poor flow, poor penetration properties. When soldering with 56% silver it is almost better to do without. There isn't actually any flux flow on the material, it's quite chalky and powdery even when heated on incandescent lamps. Leaves a solid mess! Copper is easily damaged by trying to break/remove the fossilized debris.

Ideal for repairing band saw blades

I have repaired several band saw blades with this. It worked very well. I could fix any bandsaw blade I tried to fix. Since then all blades have been tested without breaking again. It took a bit of dexterity to prepare the broken ends of the blade before the repair and then grind away the remaining metal along with the rest of the blade after the repair, but other than that this product worked amazingly. Definitely recommended for band saw repairs.

Not recommended for welding and soldering

I have to say up front that I have never soldered with silver before using this product, so my opinion on this product may be far from correct. However, this product did not help the molten silver solder flow into the heated joint, which I was trying to solder as hard as I had hoped. Removing it from the steel I was attempting to silver plated was a major challenge.

Temperatures that are too high are best for welding and soldering.

I tried soldering 26 gauge copper wire to carbon steel using Harris Safety-Silv 45 and this Stay-Silv flux. The microtorch nearly vaporized the copper before it got hot enough to melt the solder and boil the flux. Stay-Brite low-grade solder with stay-clean liquid flux and a soldering iron worked better for me. Note: I'm a hobbyist, not a plumber or electrician. My working area is less than 1 cm2, so redundant. Update, three months later: it turned out that the plastic tub was leaking. It must…
