Hard plastic which is good but there is a lot of play between the guides. Extremely loose and obviously has no lock. You can only transfer the measurement if you hold it very gently or tape the slides together before proceeding with the measurement. I don't know if it is defective or should be.

Suitable for small applications that require sizing. They're good for (for a moment) making sure one side fits the other. BUT, if you plan to use # measurements, the ruler DOES NOT START at 0. So your measurements will always differ by a few millimeters. This won't work if you need really accurate ruler measurements.

I tossed this into my shopping cart to promote something lightweight to have in my toolbox for quick, non-critical measurements that I need to capture and transmit. And somehow it cannot fulfill this function. - From the picture it looks like it has a little plastic wheel to move it (like a real caliper). . . but it's really just an exceptionally unergonomic protrusion that cuts into the thumb. The two plastic parts are bent just by looking at them (everything is bent, actually) and get stuck…
