The Grandfather of All Disaster Movies

A four-engine airliner flying from Hawaii to Los Angeles fired its engine halfway, at the point of no return. Well, either the plane has to turn back and be sure it will crash, or fly forward "on the wing and in prayer” and hope to land safely on the destination. During this stressful time, we have flashbacks to the lives of the passengers and the pilot (played by Wayne). This movie is the first of all airplane thrillers and the granddaddy of all disaster movies like Rising Hell and you get the

The High & Mighty flies again

This film is a film about an airplane pilot. The circumstances that brought them to such a terrible way of flying were indeed rare. But from that moment the strategies of saving fuel and increasing flight duration became logical. Of course, to be interesting, there had to be a leaking tank. In terms of aircraft wobble, the DC-6 and 7 shook as they approached stall speed. and in those days it was probably a good thing to throw the passengers' belongings overboard. I was amazed at the approach…

The granddaddy of plane crash movies!

This film, which by today's standards may seem a bit whimsical, is nonetheless a beautifully acted, suspenseful disaster drama that was the forerunner of all subsequent airline disaster films. The cast of the ensemble is excellent; Filled with well-known stars of the 1950s, it's led by a sensitive but poised performance by John Wayne, who shows another side of his talent in this film. It's not an action movie or western. It's a character-driven psychological thriller, and Wayne's acting is…

Finally, Disc 2 is worth checking out.

This was undoubtedly the inspiration for subsequent disaster films, although they had almost no violence and no fatalities. I saw this film on TV many years ago and I remember really liking it. I jumped at the opportunity to purchase the 2 disc DVD and was not disappointed. The Ultra-Wide Cinemascope broadcast certainly pays homage to those people who are working madly to preserve America's film heritage, especially after the studio system collapsed. The Great and Mighty is a suspense soap…

The Duke at His Finest

A bit bumpy, three things save this film: John Wayne's great acting, majestic music and a dramatic ending. The role is atypical, reserved, requiring a certain restraint and subtlety. He responds with utmost effort, and the film gives you a chance to see what an actor the Duke would have been if his career had gone in that direction rather than the pompous, scandalous, overbearing roles he's known for. His character here is even touched by a deep personal and professional tragedy. Wayne plays…

Another John Wayne Classic Movie Great Music

This is a 1955 John Wayne Classic Old Drama. Yes, it's dated from the actors, acting, events, etc., but it is still an interesting movie. The musical accompaniment has proven itself and is still a pleasure to listen to. John Wayne portrays a typical old school hero that is so seldom portrayed. He takes control when needed to save the day and get everyone safely grounded with a safe landing at the end. I really liked the little things that are shown in the film. Things that were acceptable in…
