I've seen reviews that say you can do it yourself. Possibly, but the PVC on it is quite thick and durable. It was great to use on the beach here in San Francisco. I bought a second one. Lightweight plastic tube. Used for fishing for three days. After hitting the sand, the plastic began to crack. It was good if you plan to fish once or twice. So on the third day I went to a big store and bought a heavy plastic pipe that plumbers use. I cut it in half with a handsaw, bought a coupler and added it to the end. There are now two pipes and the coupling can be replaced if it breaks. I recommend spending a little more to get the metal version.
