Irwin Tools Marples M444SB6N Woodworking Chisel Set – Precision Craftsmanship at its Finest! Review

I wanted a set of chisels with a box. At least 6 sizes up to 1 inch from a brand I know, but nothing insanely expensive. Well I have everything BUT. The edges were literally no better than butter knives. I spent 2 hours sanding, sanding and polishing by hand. Longevity is unknown as they definitely don't have a full shaft, and with the help of a magnet they appear to have shafts that are about 1/3 the length of the handles. OK. so many options, so few at hardware stores, you're taking a risk.

I have more expensive Swiss made chisels that do the job well, but I use these chisels a lot more often. They hold an edge and do not need to be treated like delicate precision parts. Instead of tapping the end of the handle with your hand, you can hit it with a hammer and they'll keep coming back. I am a trained carpenter. My son recently decided to become a carpenter too! When I opened my shop, I recommended one of the first tool sets to him. Highly recommended!

These chisels are made in China but are sharp and will hold the blade (at least for pine and cherry). I'm not a professional, but I do household chores and buy quality tools to save my personal time. I don't know how these chisels will perform in a professional shop but for the money they are very good. Excellent chisels despite the opinions of internet forum snobs. You have the potential to work wonderfully. Out of the box they are very easy to use. But if you want to get the best out of them, they need to be properly aligned and sharpened. The steel used is very hard. This means they are prone to damage if dropped or even chipped if sharpened and misused. Solid steel is great when set up properly.
