Maybe a placebo: Fire safety

Shortly after I bought it I wanted to make sure it worked so I tried putting it in places I thought it would detect carbon monoxide. Right next to a car's exhaust, next to my oven during a self-cleaning cycle, etc. I've never seen anything other than 0 on the display. Just thought I had good devices and wasn't worried. 4 years later after purchase, the detector starts to go crazy and squeak. Scared me to death. I opened the windows, grabbed the detector and carried it outside. He didn't tell me

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • Reliability

Began to fail after 10 months; I have to replace it.

I bought a carbon monoxide detector of this model in February 2017 and in December 2017 it started beeping one of the nights. I jumped out of bed, assuming I was at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, but it just blinked 888 and beeped erratically. I suspected a problem with the battery, so I replaced the batteries and hung the unit back on the wall. A day or two later it started squeaking again at night. Now I was very concerned that I had a carbon monoxide problem, but then again - it just…

Kidde Battery Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm

This unit was purchased to replace another carbon monoxide alarm. My old block finally died after seven years. It plugs into the wall, and since power outlets are always available, I went with the battery-powered model. The device is supplied with three AA alkaline batteries, an instruction manual and two screws and anchors if necessary. It stands great on its own so I put it on the dresser. It is very easy to use - slide the back panel, insert the included batteries and slide the panel to…

The best return on our money.

Second one I've bought for the house. I have five different devices in the house, some use batteries, some are plug-in models. All of these devices are not the best. They work based on two factors: the concentration of carbon monoxide and the length of time at that concentration. Two units sounded simultaneously. They had different numbers, but they were in the same room. Trace the problem to a water heater with a dirty flame. The problem will be resolved and the alarms will be silenced. I read

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Good but not great

Didn't last long, unreliable and alarm sounded false

Bought this unit about a year and a half ago. While it worked for me, it seemed to work fine. However yesterday at 1am a 4 tone alarm sounded. As no other alarms were sounding in the area, I proceeded cautiously by opening all doors/windows and turning on all fans. I then replaced the battery on the device and within 20 minutes the device was back up and running with a 4 tone alarm. Also, the LED displayed a wide range of measurements - all ranging from 30 to 336. Seeing such high numbers was…

Pros
  • Delivery was very quick
Cons
  • Not happy with everything

It's hard to tell if emergency equipment like carbon monoxide detectors will actually work unless you are actually exposed to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. And if the carbon monoxide detector doesn't work, you won't know about it; Instead, you would just poison yourself and think everything is fine. The only way to really know if it works is to put it in an airtight container and generate CO. Since I love playing with dangerous chemicals at home, I decided to give this one a try. By…

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
