My cat used the sandbox without any problems. His urine remained separate and could easily be collected with a collector. The only problem...the cap on the collection tube didn't stay on! Inserted... bounced back. I definitely don't want to risk transporting my cat's urine with the tubes provided. I ended up having to use a Tupperware container.

It's rare for a vet to take a urine sample directly from my cat's bladder, so I started using these kits as a backup. I keep a special small tray especially for this purpose and clean it after each use. Cleaning the bowl is the hardest part of using this kit: my cat doesn't mind using it and with a syringe and sample collection tube, a sample is easily taken. It really works. I think cats love sand. I had no problem getting my two cats to use the sand. I placed it in an 8x10 rectangular baking dish. I soon had the goods. I don't think the sand needs to be very deep. Sand does not absorb moisture at all, and urine accumulates at the top. My 12 year old calico has recurring UTIs that affect her nutrition and digestion; so she decreases. Last year I tried shredded paper. As long as it worked, finding urine wasn't very pleasant. Based on the 'disposable' kit I bought earlier, I expected this '3 piece box' to be a box of three 'regular' 2lb sandbags EVERYONE with sample kits is. This price is definitely worth it! You need to use a clean tray, put sand on the bottom, and when the cat uses it, the urine will puddle instead of being absorbed.
