Mixed feelings about wood screws

I bought these along with a deck attachment for my 10' x 20' deck project with 2' x 6' top planks. The device has worked well so far, everything is fine with these screws. The heads are too thick to fit in the mounting hole. I could live with driving them in without tools. These screws don't pull the boards down when tightened (due to the small heads). The screw will go right through the board if overtightened. To counteract this, I used an 8" C-Clamp to hold the top boards firmly against the…

Wrong fasteners for my application

These screws did not work on my deck. I used standard 5/4 compression wood from a big box store. The wood there isn't fully dry and will move a bit, the shrinkage was enough to break more than half the fasteners I've used, so I'd say they don't have much shear strength. I suspect they do well with composite decking, but not with natural wood. They can also work well on a wooden deck that's mostly in the shade, or other areas that don't experience large temperature/humidity swings. I also had…

Fragile Screws Break After Season

My wife and I used the Kreg Deck Jig and these screws to install our wood deck. Jig is great. Not many screws. We had very few problems during installation. There are pilot holes in the deck mount and they fit in easily. The problem manifested itself in the spring of the following year: a couple of seasons of tree movement was enough to break the bolts. They don't bend and aren't strong enough to keep the tree moving. More than 1/3 of the screws broke and the decking boards came loose. A…
