I've never used an umbrella or a bobbin winder, but it's pretty easy to work with. Before purchasing this kit I dyed my own yarn and after it dried I sat on the couch and held the yarn with my knees as I hand twisted it into a ball. I've never tried quick yarn but after buying 12 skeins of hand dyed yarn I didn't want to suffer from it myself put in cake; I always manage to make a terrible mess! I don't understand how the yarn sailors avoid this, but they do. It was very easy to put the swift on my kitchen table and no effort to wrap yarn around it. I then twisted the yarn into a cake with a ball winder and was super happy when there wasn't a single ball! I had all 12 (good sized) skeins of yarn wrapped into cakes for half

It was very easy to set up. I've never used a Swift, but I bought a ball wrapper from another store that had a stationary cone and a moving feed arm. The ball was dirty and I didn't finish the skein while using it. This winding machine has a fixed arm and the cone itself moves. My finger yarn made perfect cakes. Swift held the strand in place and there was no tangling. The thread caught around the corner at the end of the bottom of the quick arms, but that was easily fixed by lifting the thread
