Good when heavy use is required.

I purchased a Lansky set that did not include an additional course stone. That's when I realized that many of the knives I sharpened really needed a more aggressive sharpening to start the sharpening process. Since buying an extra stone I can reshape a bad edge pretty quickly and get a really good edge after using other stones consistently. I recommend if you have a lot of large and blunt knives. He steers things in the right direction.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Unsure

I added this to my previously purchased Lansky sharpening system. I bought a set that only had three stones (large, medium and small). The situations were getting too frequent and I really needed a very coarse stone so I added it to my Lansky set. Nothing to say except that it does exactly what I expected. It is a more aggressive stone which means less time is spent honing finer grit wheels. Works just like the stones I've had from Lansky. Completely satisfied with the purchase!

My knives are neglected because I don't sharpen them very well and it's frustrating. So I thought maybe I need an extra coarse rock to really shed the edges. Bingo. This morning I sharpened a very dull French Messermeister knife that had been overused. The tip has broken off, there are a few notches on the edge. Well, the nicks are…
