Apple has stopped using hard disk drives in general. The MacBook will never go back to disk storage, and it's a worthwhile decision. I ran a series of tests on both a Windows 10 laptop and MacBook Air and everything it's supposed to do, it does. It worked well on my desktop Mac and my laptop Mac. It worked just as well as a remote Mac DVD player and was about 1/3 the cost. This doesn't work on my desktop or laptop. I think the problem is not enough current on the cable. The docs say that if you have power issues, they will send you a replacement unit free of charge with two cables to plug into two USB ports to get it working.
