Description of Lisle 81850 Combination Brake Lining

Designed to check both straight on or at a 90 Degree angle to the rotor with offset tips so the gauges can be used without removing the wheel or caliper assembly on many applications. Brake lining gauges identify thickness levels for brake lining inspection. Made from durable, flexible acetal. The gauges are color coded to match SAE or Metric recommendations for brake pad replacement

Normal product under Diagnostic, Testing & Gauging Tools

I am an automotive technician with 25 years experience and use this product to measure brake pad thickness without having to remove the wheel depending on the design . I was hoping the product would be metal and not plastic. I prefer metal because it doesn't bend when I try to fit it into a tighter gauge point. The plastic bend is too strong but still works. I removed the chain and installed a 6mm x 1.0 bolt with a self-locking nut to keep it straight but still swing freely rather than dangling

Pros
  • Made from durable flexible acetal
Cons
  • Older model

You save a lot of time with this tool

In many cases you can check the pad thickness without removing the tyres. It depends on the design of the rim and the brake calipers. In some cases you can check the thickness of the liner through a hole in the rim. Of course, this only works with very large drives, e.g. B. in a truck. In other cases, you can check the lining thickness from the inside. Of course, that helps if the car is already on the lift. However, if you don't need to remove the tires, this can save you a few minutes. The…

Pros
  • Brake pad gauges determine thickness values for checking brake pads

  • Reliability

This is normal. Bought these to give to my son to check the remaining life of the brake pads. It's still hard to see where to see an Eve brake pad with these on most cars, so I'd say they're of limited use. I'm very used to just looking at worn brake pads, so a tool like this is another thing to have on hand. If you haven't checked your brake pads yet, that might be okay, but I think it will be harder for you to know where to check first...they didn't help, for example, the Jeep Wrangler JK…
