🌡️ Enhanced Lyman Digital Lead Casting Thermometer Review

Didn't work for me. Never went above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. I put it in a pot of molten lead and heated it to 87 degrees. I tried a pot of boiling water that we all know is 212 degrees and got 87 degrees. sent back.

This is the best little thermometer I have ever owned. You could probably use that la la to get the internal temperature of your Thanksgiving turkey

Works well. I've done 4 casting sessions so far and based on the time ratio and the same settings on my crucible it reads consistently every time. It also fires exactly at ambient temperature every time. Time will tell if this holds up, but I'll post an update if it doesn't.

It reads the temperature very well and accurately. However, it definitely needs some kind of cheap clip to hold it in place. Apparently on a Lee lead boiler or most other heaters. It's a royal pain to hold on top and a bit of a burn hazard.

The quality control of this device is extremely poor. When I tested the thermometer, it worked in reverse. The initial temperature was about right, but after placing the probe in hot water the temperature went down. After looking at other reviews on other sites, the wires in the probe are mixed up. I had to disassemble the connector and swap the wires. After that it works correctly. You really need to test these probes before they leave the factory. I have a Lee Crucible for casting things and it's important to watch the temperature of the metal for proper casting. This thermometer is accurate and easy to use as well as fast. I have mechanical thermometers that are good but often get in the way because they need something to hang. It's quick to use, you turn it on and stick the probe a few inches into the metal and in seconds you'll get a reading. It all takes less than a minute, so your casting won't be interrupted at all. We bought a small lead boiler for work (experimental assembly of lead-acid batteries) that has no thermostat and only numbers 1-10. When we cast we aim for a specific temperature to ensure we have enough working time but not too hot to cause problems with our slabs melting. It seems to work pretty well. This device seems very easy to use for home skaters. It looks good for this application BUT do not abuse this device as it is made of very thin plastic. This is my second device because the first in the package had parts of the body broken upon delivery, the package was crushed! Exchanged in two days! I bought a Lyman digital lead thermometer this week and tried to use it today. The thermometer reads the ambient temperature to within a few degrees, but when I put the thermocouple in a cauldron of molten lead, the thermometer only read 197 degrees Fahrenheit.
