Marineland Cartridge Refill Penguin Filter Review

I use this one filled with crushed lava rock in addition to the regular filter (which I never change until it falls apart). I have a pair of Penguin 200's. They are great filters but the wheels keep stopping. I don't worry about it anymore because lava rock is a great bioenvironment and I can use another tank with it right away. At first I tried to fill it with peat, but everything comes out. I could try putting the peat in a knee high nylon bag first and dividing it between the compartments.

When it comes to plastic, Marineland know what they're doing. They have clasps on both sides on the outside that keep the edges perfectly flush so not even a grain of charcoal can escape through the sides. The front and rear grills are the same size as the Rite size C. Inside there are compartments or tabs that facilitate even filling and then when connected together will not fall to the ground by gravity. I used to sell filters for less than $1 but lately the price seems to have gone up. An internet search for homemade filters came across this gem and I ordered two. They have been in my aquarium for a few weeks now and I am very happy. Since I had a filler bag, I used it instead of buying sheets. TAAAAAAAAA much better than the BioWheel bag - I used one and filled it with filter material, then filled the other with charcoal and phosguard and both fit snugly in my Penguin 200, with room for stuffing You more filters closer to the back.
