This is NOT a real let alone classic abacus.

I haven't seen an abacus in years and can't remember exactly what it looked like. I believe it's real, apart from a greater variety of colors. Then my son noticed it wasn't real and in fact after some googling I confirmed it. Why Melissa and Doug would sell anything with such a misleading description is beyond me.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Big and chunky

Easy to use and best math tool

I love the abacus, it was the first math class tool for a reason. I'm really sorry I didn't get this instead of wasting money on other products I never touched again. I should have bought this when my kids were 2.5-3 years old! I find it difficult to teach my 4.5 year old boys addition, subtraction and other concepts and this is ideal because it teaches all these concepts, encourages the use of logic and my boys respond better to it because of their visualization. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities

Classic math tool for all kids

Another high quality toy from Melissa and Doug. This is a great toy for learning math visually. However, I found medium sized wooden sticks to be a little flimsy and brittle, so be aware that they can easily break with little pressure. The picture is a little deceptive; There isn't as much space between the rows of beads as in the photo, and there isn't as much space at the end of the rows, making it a bit difficult to separate the beads for counting as they looked grouped. However, these are…

Beautifully made for bills

This is a great novelty and toy. My husband is interested in science and math so he was keen for our little one to have a score. At 1 year old she cannot solve math problems. However, she likes to move the beads back and forth, which is a good agility workout. Melissa and Doug make great toys (check out their puzzles and food) and to be honest I'm surprised it doesn't cost more. The base is solid - she's been using it for a few months now and nothing has fallen apart. She can easily grab it and

New Generation Antique Calculator Tool

This little girl does math for her age and I was looking for a tool that could help her solve problems without resorting to electronic contraction. Her fingers and toes worked for a while, but she has very few of them left. Enter the abacus, a counting tool that has helped keep track of large numbers for thousands of years. No batteries or power adapter required. To my surprise, the child immediately got used to it and easily calculates large numbers. I also found it interesting how it…

Take these bills! suitable for toddler toys

My 7 year old daughter still uses her fingers for simple addition despite being in a gifted math program and having progressed to and understands more advanced math. Of course she's missing her fingers! So I ordered this abacus not sure if she would even understand how to use it. Well she uses it daily and it's a great image to really see what each number looks like and why we need to add or subtract them to solve a problem. She even learned simple multiplication (3x3, 2x4 and 2x11 were…

Bead dowels are the weak link.

I bought this to show my 4 year old granddaughter a simple addition. To be honest I have no idea how the ancients used the abacus, but I figured adding small numbers would be a good use. I asked her to move one bead to the right in the top row, then one bead in the second row. Before I could ask her to count the 1+1 beads and move the total to the third row, she was already counting them. "I don't need no more noise, Grandma." She began to move, counting the beads on the bottom rows. Then she…
