Works as intended and is essential for home wine making. They show the specific gravity, the sugar content (clumping) and the possible alcohol content. They don't measure the alcohol content for you, you have to calculate it. Serious winemakers already know that. I keep a few of these because I'm clumsy and have a habit of dropping them. Don't expect these things to survive the fall, they won't. They're flimsy and fragile, but with proper handling, they're fine.

When I learned how to use it I was very satisfied. It provides accurate readings every time and is extremely durable. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it doesn't have proper instructions. If you already know how to use a hydrometer, this is for you. If you've never used it before, it's going to take some time and some research to figure out how it works. It has helped me make some very good wines and some really terrible wines with killer alcohol levels.

This is the first one I've ever had. It's very fragile, but I assume they are. a folded piece of paper on which different calibers are printed. The page looked like it was pasted and may not be correct. It came with a plastic sleeve for reading. If you put the lid on the ground, it will stand alone (terribly fragile). Can you glue a heavy flat base to it?

So it's a great tool and very easy to use. One thing I would recommend is to buy a suitable cylinder for it that has enough room to move the hydrometer up and down without it touching the sides of the tank and also isn't too big since you don't want to waste valuable beer. Also, it is highly recommended to use a beer or wine thief that is easy to sanitize so you can get a sample without contaminating your batch. . The one I have has a pointed end (which I don't like and so I ordered these hoping to get a round one). The paper scale also doesn't look as solid as the others I've bought. Again, the scale is shifted by 0.002, just like on the other one. This shows 0.998 in DI and tap water at 70 degrees. My other reads 1.002 at 70 degrees, so who knows. It works well, the readings when setting it up are exactly the same as my other one. It's a spare because those things break. Just part of brewing

This is frustrating. I specifically ordered this one because the picture showed it without fuss as a regular black and white hydrometer. Instead, they sent a colorful version with all those strips and "helpful manuals" printed on it, making the instrument hard to read! Not the advertised tool.
