Description of ๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Nagura Stone Honing Stones: Ultimate Sharpening Tool for Precision Blade Maintenance

Nagura are prep/correcting stones used with full-size sharpening stones (whetstones) to assist in sharpening knives, razors, chisels, planes, and other blades. Nagura are used to: 1) create a sharpening slurry/paste on the working surface of whetsones, 2) clean a glazed surface from trapped metal micro shavings and swarf, which inhibit sharpening, and 3) flatten the working surface which becomes warped (dished) with use. By creating a cutting slurry, nagura aid in a uniform, better controlled sharpening movement by eliminating suction between the blade and the stone and resulting skipping action leading to deformed or micro chipped bevels; nagura also help to break down grit particles of the host stone into smaller, finer size particles. The grit range of whetstones and naguras should be matched to create a homogeneous slurry with abrasive particles of similar size; this will extend the life of whetstones and blades. 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25mm); 3.2 oz (90 g); grit #8000 (can be used with sharpening stones with grit #8000 and higher).

Chinese imitations

The product is declared as Japanese. I think this is completely false advertising. I'm pretty sure this is a poor quality Chinese made product. I have bought 220, 1000, 4000 and 12000 grit stones and found them to be questionable grit.

Pros
  • Price
Cons
  • Small change

Please pay attention to the size.

The picture looks like a big rock. Not that it was the size of an eraser. It obviously has dimensions if you pay attention. I suppose I can sharpen a miniature knife but certainly not my card scraper which is why I bought it.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Bad instructions

Raise the manure a bit slow, but generally helps

First, note that this is not a leveling stone. Nagura stones are used to create mud on the sharpening stone itself, so you will need to match the grit of your Nagura to the water stones you are using to sharpen. If you need to level a concave water stone, there are separate products for this. When used properly, water stones make knives sharper and more durable than any other type of sharpener such as diamond or oil stones. In other words, not only does a knife blade become sharper whenโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Great construction
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
