not very easy to use

The blade is sharp and retracts making it safe. The problem is that it's so difficult to keep the blade extended to cut that the pressure causes the device to move and end up with a crooked cut. The product description also states that it comes with a self-healing mat. The "mat" is 2" x 3" which makes it unusable as well as the fact that it won't be cut resistant like a blade if dropped directly on the table below.

Great product for the price

Great product for the price. If you know what you're doing, it cuts near-perfect mats. Apply firm pressure to the guide for clean, straight cuts, and cut slightly longer for clean edges. I drew cutting lines on the front of the rug to cut with an Xacto knife prior to purchasing this product. I was too lazy to draw her from behind again. So I just used this product on the front of the mat and it still worked great. no pressure marks or anything.

Works great with knives and box cutters

To be honest I don't understand why so many people have trouble with this thing. The last time I cut a carpet was around 1994 for my portfolio at AP Studios. But here's my teenage girl with odd shaped artwork that she wants to display at the county fair and I don't want to spend a fortune on custom sized rugs so I bought a solid color rug which is reluctantly sold at Michael's (where they sell it really do). would have preferred if I paid them a small fortune for custom size rugs) and cut rugsโ€ฆ

Hard to use in crafting

I do a lot of crafting and crafting. I carefully followed the advice of others and watched several tutorial videos on YouTube. I used a strong steel ruler pressed firmly against the edge. The cuts came out clean except for the corners where they didn't go through because I didn't want to cut too far past them. If you go over this area again it's a mess - you can only make one proper cut for a clean edge. Also, it wasn't easy to figure out where the cut would be based on the instructions on theโ€ฆ

Works well

Needs to change the framed mat purchased to fit my daughter's 30x40 diamond painting Cutter so I chose this option over a professional framing or expensive tool. On the back of the rug I drew the necessary cutting lines with a pencil. Insert a cutting mat, my purchased mat, and then a metal ruler. After deciding where to place the ruler, I attached it to the kitchen island so that the pencil lines lay between the visible area of the tool. Press down on the tool to ensure the blade touches theโ€ฆ

DOES NOT CUT 45 DEGREES.

This unit is disappointing because it doesn't cut at a 45 degree angle. I needed a cutter to make a 45 degree cut to connect two pieces of styrofoam and create a clean 90 degree angle. This is not the intended use of this product. Most likely this machine cuts at a 38 degree angle as my research has shown that most carpet cutters cut at a 38 degree angle (I could be wrong). The difference between 45 and 38 degrees is so small that you probably won't notice the difference when cutting mats. As a

Very cheap and messy

Oh. This thing was a disaster, not a bug. I read the reviews before buying so I was willing to test it before making my final choice but GOOD! I had to test a whole piece of museum carpet before I finally figured it out. Here are a few things worth noting: 1. I've never found a middle ground where the blade could cut through a museum board that's dense but doesn't cut too deep into my cutting mat. The blade either didn't cut completely or cut through and deep into my cutting mat. The problemโ€ฆ
