OTC's BMW Head Bolt Socket makes short work of removing and/or installing cylinder head bolts on BMW M42 4-cylinder and M50 6-cylinder DOHC engines. Designed specifically for removing these bolts, this tool features an E12 external TORX socket on the end of an extension sized to reach these bolts without the need for additional extensions. Equipped with a spring loaded detent ball to hold the bolts in place on the end of the tool, making installation and removal simple and easy. Use with a 1/2 inch ratchet, breaker bar, or torque wrench (not included). Manufactured from durable, high quality materials for excellent performance and long life.

Fell apart on first screw

The screw mount fell off and dropped a small ball bearing into the head screw hole. Luckily I was able to fix it, it could have ruined my engine.

The tip has a ball to hold the head screw.

The tip has a ball to hold the cap screw. The ball keeps falling as the tape holding it detaches from the top. Leave the ball outside so it doesn't fall into the engine.

Ideal for DIY, best tools and equipment

Currently replacing the headgear on our Z3 project car and this tool does the job. Nothing fancy but works as it should for head bolts. Good quality, I just hate paying $20 for a single purpose tool. Arrived very quickly and well packaged.

Warning! Don't buy this!

Sounds like a good deal. He removed 3 head screws on the BMW and I noticed the clip on the end was missing. He fell down and sat in his head. I fished it out and noticed the ball bearing cup was missing too! I could not find it. Head removed, checked - without success. I removed the cameras (just to find them) and still couldn't find them. Is it somewhere in the engine? Yes, probably. Should I disassemble the block to find it? My only hope is that it isn't hardened and won't break through theโ€ฆ

In any case, this feature wasn't really needed as the cap screw and washer can easily be removed with a magnet or a vacuum cleaner

Catching the screw head to pull it out is poorly designed. Its grip is too loose for its intended function, and spring bushing expansion causes glitches in the head casting as the bolt rotates, so I had to remove the ball and bushing to avoid glitches. Anyway, this feature wasn't really necessary as the cap screw and washer could easily be removed with a magnet or a vacuum cleaner. Otherwise the tool worked great and was just the right size for the limited space available.
