Great alternative to plastic cups

I used to use disposable plastic cups for my crested gecko, but when I saw them I bought them straight away. They are strong and thick and will not get wet for 24 hours even if you pour water into them. They fit 0.5 ounce coasters.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

Mold prone - reptiles & amphibians

In theory I like them a lot because I want to use less plastic. They have never leaked and have done their job as food and water containers for my crested gecko. However, in a closed bottom magnetic holder (like many faux stone cups sold by Pangea etc.) these paper cups tend to mold quickly in a high humidity environment. That's why I'm going back to plastic.

Pros
  • Great construction

Sustainable and long lasting

They are great! Although they are biodegradable, they do not break down with the wet food they contain. My Cresti eats them with no problem. The only problem I've had is that sometimes after a few days mold appears on the underside, but by then there's still time to change the lining. Because they come in such a large package, they last a long time on me. I feel great knowing they are breaking and won't stay on our planet forever!

Pros
  • Best in niche
Cons
  • I will add later

Absorbs too much water

These cups absorb too much water and the food will be too dry. You can try to compensate by adding more water, but then the food will get too wet until the water is absorbed. The presence of small disposable cups makes feeding the gecko easier. I used small plastics which were great except they are plastic. I was hoping these biodegradable cups would be the answer, but no, they hold way too much water. I go back to a small ceramic plate.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • Very expensive

Not the size I expected

Not what I expected but it was 100% for me. I thought they were small bowls of the usual size. I didn't read the part where it said the product weighs about 3 ounces lol. I wanted to feed this to stray cats in my area but apparently they are too small. Unfortunately, this item is non-returnable, so my cats now only use it as a toy. So just in case anyone thinks these are regular sized shells, I hope my photo helps you and shows how tiny they really are.

Pros
  • Great fit for me
Cons
  • No instructions

Good but not as good as plastic cups.

Yes, they work and there are no leakage problems for at least 24 hours. BUT not as good as plastic.1. Diets are a bit more difficult to stir due to the coarser material, I tended to slosh diet bits out of the cup the harder I stirred. Smooth plastic cups make mixing easier.2. Similarly, the rougher material makes some of the protrusions a bit more difficult to insert and pull out (sometimes you have to push them in). Plastic cups are easier to insert and remove.3. Then there is the obvious…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Quick guide

Great for eco-conscious reptile owners

After seeing how many cups I use for my crested gecko I was so happy to find them. I pre-mix CGD for a week so I can fill cups easily and have no leakage issues. I don't have to worry about all the plastic waste I come across and I'm sure it would be great to compost if you went down this route. As long as you change your food regularly, you shouldn't have any problems with mold or leakage. However, before filling I would check for holes (I only found one hole in the entire 100 pack so don't…
