Park Tool FR 8 Freewheel Remover Review

Durable, high quality tool. Considering it arrived from the UK, it came a lot sooner than Revane expected, which is what I thought too.

Only fits tiny BMX flip flop ratchets. Not suitable for track or mountain single-speed wheels with a freewheel. I learned the hard way, but that's okay, I'll just donate it to the local bike cooperative.

This 4 tooth (32mm) freehub tool removes a cassette that is tightly wrapped around a threaded bushing. However, it took a long stretch to get it loose, but the sprockets eventually turned counter-clockwise and loosened without damaging the tool or the freehub mechanism.

I have a 13T Odyssey freewheel BMX and this tool will not fit into the notches on the clutch making it totally useless as it needs a perfect fit for the torque required to remove the freewheel from the hub.

Walls connecting all four tabs/buttons needed work. As a result, the four tabs/buttons do not fit into the freehub. Compare that to the F6 and see how the F6 only has four lugs sticking out. It should have been the same. I can't even use it.

This tool didn't fit my ratchet and I had to widen the slots on the ratchet with a dremel to make it fit. I think it was probably just a cheap freewheel issue - hence the 4 stars - given the quality that park tools are known for. I ended up having to use a percussion gun to remove the modified freewheel and the tool still looks in perfect shape.

As now mentioned in the description, this is a freewheel removal tool only for BMX hubs with a 30 x 1 mm thread. If you have a single speed with a threaded 1.37x24 BMX freehub, like my Schwinn Single Speed/Fixed Gear Trigger, then you probably need a Park FR-6 removal tool. Park tools are of the highest quality and this is no exception. There are instructions on the packaging on how to use this to disengage the freewheel, which can be difficult as the chain pulls on the freewheel while riding.
