Great drive, small footprint, fast data transfer, great price

I have several WD My Passports in this design. This works perfectly and I use it to transfer all my backed up files from my desktop when I'm traveling with my laptop. Works fast, connects to WD My Cloud via USB which is good for moving files back and forth. I bought a bag from Revain Basics to carry the drive. It fits perfectly with a USB 3.0 cable on one side and a floppy drive on the other side. An excellent solution for storing large amounts of data on a small external drive. The only thing…

  • New
Cons
  • Expensive Insurance

Like it a lot. Good portable fuse.

My last WD external hard drive was 500GB for my book and the drive is small enough to fit in my pocket but it holds a huge amount of data. It looks very nice, I like the blue body and so far it works very well. I was able to easily connect it to my Android TV just by plugging it into a USB port. But the main reason I got this drive was to back up my smartphone photos. I was hoping that it would just connect to my smartphone (Note 5) via an OTG cable and I was able to connect it and detect…

  • GOLS certified

I am very happy with this external hard drive.

7 months ago I hooked this up to my Channel Master DVR+ and so far it's working like a champ. I can access this external hard drive from another computer, tablet or device anywhere in my house to watch a recorded program, then my TV entertainment setup will be really amazing. Otherwise I would have to transfer the hard drive from device to device, which I don't want to do.

Pros
  • Looking forward to it
Cons
  • Something else

Great lightweight hard drive for storing everything

Great lightweight hard drive I use to store videos and pictures. It works great with my MacBookPro and I had no problem ejecting the drive. Compact enough to take with you on the go when you want to store your music library or anything else that doesn't fit in your computer's onboard storage. It gets warm after a few hours, but not by much. The hard drive is very quiet. The status light can be a little annoying at night when I'm about to go to bed as it doesn't turn off when I close my laptop…

Pros
  • A few competitors
Cons
  • Nothing here

This particular WD external drive had a problem and had to be reformatted after I loaded photos and other data onto it. I couldn't recover the data and had to contact WD for a replacement. Purchased in April 2016, 1 year warranty. Luckily WD honored their warranty and I was able to exchange the failed drive for a brand new one for free. This is the first time I've had a problem with a WD external drive. I will continue to buy this product. John J Donadio

Bought 4 in one year, BUT 2 are already broken!

Long story short I bought 3 of these, 2 broke in less than 10 months! -- I've bought 3 others since I got this one, and the hard truth is that it's ALREADY failing (I'm in a hurry to do all my backups before it actually dies completely). I'm a filmmaker/photographer so I bought one color for photography, one color for personal film projects, one for my clients and one for my editor. The first one fails (strange noise, doesn't appear on the desktop, ejects itself, takes time to download files)…

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • I'm worried

Not suitable for backup due to bad software

This is not the best backup solution if you don't want to spend extra money on backup software. The software that comes with this device is terrible. It keeps backups on disk until disk is full. It will then prompt you to buy a new drive. There is no way to force it to automatically delete old backups. And there is no way to delete a bunch of backups. So every day (depending on how often you back up) you get a message that the backup failed because there was no disk space. A backup can then be…

Pros
  • Automatic local and cloud backup. Stylish design with bright colors
Cons
  • Speed

Works great so far, will have to wait for reliability rating

I bought this to connect to a network video recorder for home security recording. I bought 3TB because I had no idea how much storage I was going to use, but looking back now I should have bought 1TB. Looks like I can record 4 camera alarms for a little under two years (90 weeks) before it starts overwriting - wow! H.264 compression and easy alarm storage reduce footprint. And don't get me wrong, my alarms go off everywhere, but each only records about 35 seconds, so it doesn't take up much…

Pros
  • Secure portable storage up to 3TB
Cons
  • No form required

So far, so good. in data store

My experience with Western Digital so far has been very positive. This Passport Ultra is my fourth. All others are still in good condition and designed for different computers. I did the first full backup of my laptop to this drive and everything went smoothly. There is plenty of free space for subsequent backups. I don't need to back up videos, movies, photos and music, just important personal files. All my media files are backed up on a network storage device (also WD), making them accessible

Pros
  • Formatted for Windows. This hard drive needs to be reformatted to be compatible with Mac.
Cons
  • Annoying
